601 – BBQ and Cornhole

Welcome to Savoring Our Lives! In this week’s episode, we:

Celebrated an Abby-versary
This week marks the one-year anniversary of bringing Abby home.

Rise and Shine Burger at Mainstream Bar and Grill

Enjoyed date night in Waukesha
We visited Mainstream Bar & Grill on main street in Waukesha. Chad had the Rise and Shine Burger which he dubbed, “The Chad Burger.”

Visited Ravinia Festival to see Seal
We drove to Ravinia in Highland Park, found parking on the festival grounds and hung out with Seal. It was his “Standards” tour so the first half of the show was ’50s covers; the second half was a Seal dance party. See a set list from the tour.

Seal at Ravinia Festival

Got some test results
Ruth had the CT scan of her liver. Turns out, in addition to some hemangiomas which are NBD, they also found a 3cm legion which has a blood flow going to it. which is so not cool. She named the legion Frank and now has to see a GI guy for a consult in July.

Tried BBQ at Redbar
We ate at The Saucy Swine inside Redbar. Chad described their “bacon bombs” as “decadent” and really enjoyed their brisket. We were oddly entranced with the National Cornhole Championships which were on the televisions.

Were inspired by people who deal with depression
One of our friends is learning a programming language to create an app to send up a flare to ask for help.

513 – Pickles and Wine

Welcome to Savoring Our Lives! In this week’s episode, we:

Met Hawaiian Ruth and Coffeehouse Chad
Ruth’s therapist asked her what she would do with just two weeks left to live. She said she would go to Hawaii and chill out on the beach with a tropical drink in hand. He encouraged her to live her life in the mindset of Hawaiian Ruth.

H-Party Wine and Pizza

Enjoyed some delicious wine
We received a wine club shipment from Coppola which included a member-exclusive wine called H-Party.  And we were going to have friends over for dinner but they had to cancel, so we went into the wine vault and pulled out a 2014 Charles Woodson TwentyFour Wines Cabernet.

Learned Chad eats his least favorite things first
Chad had to clean his plate as a kid and learned to eat the stuff he didn’t like first so he could enjoy what he liked best last.

Want to share your story about what inspires you? Do you enjoy pickle-less burgers with your wine? Let us know!

512 – Vegetarian-ish

Welcome to Savoring Our Lives! In this week’s episode, we:

Resolved Our Lawnmower Drama
Our 10-year old Black and Decker electric lawnmower was on its last legs but then we got a new battery and voila! life (and our lawn) is so much better!

Kinda, Sorta Tried Vegetarianism
Ruth’s second cousin Sydnee challenged her to try being vegetarian for a week. We didn’t do it 100%, but we made some really good recipes like the Spinach Lasagna Rollups.

BBQ Chicken Salad at The Thirsty Duck

Ate Salads at The Thirsty Duck
This restaurant features duck pin (or mini) bowling. We need to reserve a lane and bring some friends along. Being vegetarian-ish, we had salads (with chicken).

Ate Sushi at Wasabi
We generally visit Wasabi Sushi Lounge for their holiday buffet, but we decided to visit for dinner and order off the menu.

Looked Up #gallstones On Instagram
Ruth is battling her gallbladder being out of sorts and had an ultrasound (insider tip: don’t look up #gallstones on Instagram) and now she needs a CT scan with contrast.

Borrowed Some Macs for Camp
Chad asked a recent client to borrow five laptops for Camp One Step. The company gave him a dozen because they thought it was an amazing opportunity to help.

511 – Hashtag: Gallbladder

Welcome to Savoring Our Lives! In this week’s episode, we:

Found out about gallbladders
Ruth has been in pain for a few weeks and went to see her doctor. Right now, the doctor is thinking it’s a gallbladder issue. We’ll find out next week after an ultrasound.

Were challenged to eat vegetarian
Ruth’s second cousin Sydnee was in town and challenged Ruth to eat vegetarian for a week (or two) and see how she feels.

Cheeseburger Pizza!

Got the wrong pizza…and the right pizza
We ordered the cheeseburger pizza and Ricardo’s rung in cheese. Whoops! They re-made the pizza AND gave us the incorrect pizza. #allthecarbsandfat

Went to Camp One Step orientation
Chad went to orientation for cancer camp this week. He’s volunteering as a counselor after having attended the camp in 1986 as a camper.

Want to share your story about what inspires you? Do you know some good camp songs? Maybe you know what a gallbladder is? Let us know!

510 – Outdoor Quota

Welcome to Savoring Our Lives! In this week’s episode, we:

Returned to The Hale House for date night
We were inspired by some new additions to the menu so we returned to The Hale House. The items we chose were unfortunately only meh. But we’re up for going back and trying some of the other new items.

Soft kitty, warm kitty, little ball of fur

Captured kittens
Kitten fest continued! We put a trap out for the four kittens under the deck and Tuesday night we got the first one. Luckily, we managed to catch the remaining three cats. They all went to MADACC and we know the first kitty has already been adopted.

Chose salads over sandwiches for lunches
We went to Blue Bat Kitchen and Tequilaria for lunch Friday. We had really delicious house margaritas. Ruth had a Korean Beef bowl and Chad tried the Cubano bowl. Earlier in the week, Chad chose a couple deconstructed sandwiches in salad form.

Chad goes bike riding

Were outdoors all day Saturday
It was 90 degrees outside and Ruth planted her flowers and got the lanai set up. Chad went bike riding with his Little Brother. They biked nearly 12 miles in the heat. Then, we went to see our nephew Grant play in a baseball tournament. All that time outside filled Chad’s “outdoor quota” for the year.

509 – Going to Camp

Welcome to Savoring Our Lives! In this week’s episode, we:

Returned to meal prep

Chili Lime Chicken Skillet

We picked four recipes and shopped for them all. We spent three hours Sunday afternoon making all the recipes. It was the perfect amount of food for the week. Check out this Chili Lime Sweet Potato Chicken Skillet recipe.

Used Yelp to find pizza
Chad was dog-sitting and we tried to find local pizza. We ended up at Pizza Man in Oak Creek. We tried a chicken pesto specialty pizza along with a Dry Creek Vineyards Cabernet.

Bought some flowers for the lanai

Never enough flowers

Ruth went shopping for plants, flowers, and hanging baskets at Prospect Hill Gardens. Everyone is done with winter and was out gathering plants.

Got the news Chad is going to camp
In middle school, Chad attended a cancer camp called Camp One Step. As a 40-year survivor, he applied and now has the opportunity to be a counselor at the same camp.

Decided to be more social
Ruth had a ton of social engagements this week and really enjoyed it. She doesn’t go out a lot but she’s going to start asking people to hang out with her. And Chad’s going to go out more, too. #tacodate #makerdate

508 – Kitten Cam

Welcome to Savoring Our Lives! In this week’s episode, we:

Got our bikes tuned up
In addition to our new treadmill, we wanted to have another movement option so we got our bikes out. We had to take them in because they needed some love after sitting for a couple years.

Kept an eye on wildlife in the yard

Hummingbird Cam

Chad set up a camera outside to keep an eye on the hummingbird feeder which was cool! And then yesterday, the beagles let us know there were cats under the deck. Later, Abby found a kitten on top of the deck. Chad tried to catch it but it ended up under the deck all day. So the hummingbird cam became kitten cam.

Worked with Abby’s trainer
Laura from Connecting with Dogs came out to visit again to help us fine-tune some of Abby’s training. We have to work on her reactivity with the dog next door as well as going back to doing crate games.

Ate out a little more than usual
We went to Double B’s BBQ to investigate the brisket. We got to see our old server, Michelle, and try the food. Then Saturday, we decided to chill at the wine bar instead of run around. Chad ended up trying the Cobb Salad Hot Dog at Ferch’s Malt Shoppe and Grille across the walkway from Vintage 38.

Ruth telling people where to go!

Posted a ridiculous photo to Facebook
Ruth posted a hilarious photo of herself on Facebook which Chad accurately titled, “Ruth Lawson: Telling people ‘where to go’ since 1970.”

507 – Breaking Scotch

Welcome to Savoring Our Lives! In this week’s episode, we:

Broke some Scotch
Chad decided to splurge on an $85 bottle of Lagavulin Single Malt Scotch. And then, gravity took over and suddenly there was Scotch all over the floor of Total Wine.

Steak, Corn, and Avocado

Grilled some corn on the cob
We decided to try winging it for dinner and invented recipes for steak, avocado, and corn on the cob. We learned you can cook husked corn in aluminum foil.

Met up with a friend
Ruth met up with her friend Erica this week and was actually early to the meeting. She didn’t know what to do with herself with all the extra time.

Had a delicious misunderstanding
Chad tried to suggest eating stuff in the fridge. Ruth misheard him say burgers at Ferch’s and Vintage 38. So, we misbehaved and had burgers for dinner. #notpaleo

Worked with our treadmill trainer
We had our second session with Andrew the personal trainer. We actually had to work during this session!

Creepy Admiral Aguilar

Celebrated Star Wars day at the ballpark
We were at the Brewers game on Friday and it was May the Fourth – aka Star Wars day. The Brewers had some fun graphics going on and there were a number of fans in costume.

506 – Instant Brisket

Welcome to Savoring Our Lives! In this week’s episode we:

Celebrated Shelley Long Appreciation Day
Actually, no. We didn’t. But Ruth got Chad to look up the history of the holiday. Turns out there is no Shelley Long Appreciation Day.

Continued to pretend we were in Vegas

Wild Mushroom Flat Bread at Milwaukee Beer Bistro

For our anniversary, we went out for steak dinner at Mr. B’s Steakhouse. The next night we went out for date night and visited Milwaukee Beer Bistro and then enjoyed tiki drinks at Foundation.

Learned to let go
Chad is letting his membership at Milwaukee Makerspace go. He likes the community but the space itself isn’t matching up with what he’s doing. And then, on Saturday we celebrated our friend Dave’s 55th birthday at a party held by his family. He’s fighting stage four lung cancer so the event was bittersweet for all.

Tried to perfect a brisket recipe
We’ve been trying to come up with a plan to eat better more consistently and Chad’s eating a little more paleo so he thought he’d give an Instant Pot recipe for brisket. The recipe took waaaay longer than we thought. So we ended up calling for pizza.

Aloha! Tiki drinks at Foundation

Started to say hello to summer
Our landscapers are on their way and we just replaced our patio chairs. Now we just need the warm weather to arrive!

505 – Making Lemonade

Welcome to Savoring Our Lives! In this week’s episode:

We had a beagle adventure
Abby got very sick Monday with acute gastroenteritis which then led to aspirated pneumonia. It was three days of ups and downs and two nights at the emergency vet. We chose to postpone our trip to Vegas to take the best care of her we can. She continues to be on the mend.

Abby Beagle resting

Chad found himself in a ditch
He was driving home from Illinois during a snowstorm and spun out into a ditch. A tow truck got him out and he received a ticket. The best news is he and the car were okay.

We got lemons and, well, we added vodka
Since we were going to be in town this weekend, we had a number of opportunities to try new restaurants and see a number of friends. We visited Mad Rooster Cafe for brunch Friday. The food was quite good. Later that night, we went out with friends to an all-you-can-eat-crab legs buffet at the local casino. Then Saturday, we stopped for birthday drinks with friends and then had dinner with another friend. Even though we’re not in Vegas, we had a great weekend.

Omelet & Potatoes at Mad Rooster Cafe

Chad got his bloodwork results from his doctor
And, he’s pre-diabetic with high cholesterol. He has a six-month follow up and his numbers need to be going in the right direction or they’ll prescribe meds. His doc wants him to focus more on less carbs and more veggies. Our dinner Saturday was all paleo and all delicious.
