201 – Fostering, Meal Prep, Makerspace

Welcome to Savoring Our Lives!

In this week’s episode, we talk about:

Foster to Adopt
We traveled to Michigan to meet Abby the Beagle. We brought her home to foster for two weeks with the option to adopt.

Chad Rocketman
Chad gave an astronomy presentation to about 60 three-year olds this week. He talked about planets, constellations, and the upcoming eclipse in August.

Meal Prep Success
We prepped 20 meals including lasagna, chicken and sweet potatoes, and breakfast burritos – all for under $3 per meal. We saved money AND calories. This week, we’ll be making slow-cooker salsa chicken and tater tot casserole.

Milwaukee Makerspace
Our very own Makerspace was featured in the most recent issue of  M Magazine. And Chad was selected to be a speaker at Milwaukee MakerFaire this September 23 and September 24.

116 – Zima, Weight, Woz

Welcome to Savoring Our Lives!

In this week’s episode, we talk about:

Wineza with Friends This week, we invited some friends over for wineza. We had some fun timesand some Zima (a malt beverage from the ’90s)! Our friends brought their beagles, Timmy and Annie. Tini let Annie play with her (favorite) toys.

Searching for Dogs
We attended Fido Fest on Saturday and chatted with a behavioral specialist about Tini and her grief. We’re not sure we’re ready or if Tini’s ready for a new dog, but we’re starting the process. We contacted BREW Beagles and another rescue group to inquire about available dogs.

Shopping and Meal Planning
Today we went grocery shopping using a digital list in the Paprika app. Turns out Chad is a digital guy; Ruth is a pen and paper gal. We’ll be prepping three make-ahead meals this Sunday. We found an easy lasagne recipe on DamnDelicious.net.

Managing Our Weight
We’re still using the LoseIt app. Ruth realized she’s consistently about 600 calories over her allotment. Chad has lost an entire quarter pound in the last month. We’re going to stick with it and add in some exercise (whaaat?!).

Inspiration This Week
Chad watched a video of Apple Computer co-founder Steve Wozniak (Woz)  where he talked about the formula for a happy life.

H =  S – F Happiness equals smiles minus frowns
H = F3 – Happiness equals food x fun x friends

Ruth had a crappy Wednesday but remembered her friend Meg’s mantra: “Look for the happiness in life’s crappiness” when she had some really great things happen.

And we were both inspired by a blog post by professional speaker Jason Kotecki – “What if you knew the numbers” which focused on how important it is to really savor every moment you have.

115 – Tiki, Tapas, Trivia

Welcome to Savoring Our Lives!

In this week’s episode, we talk about:

Tapas Dining

Tiki Thursday
We went to the opening reception for The Tiki Art of Dave Hansen. You can find him on Instagram at @laketikiwoodcrafts or on Facebook here. Dave has been hand-carving tiki for years and it was fun to meet him and find out more about his passion.

Tapas Dining Downtown
Since it was Downtown Dining Week we decided to try a restaurant off the beaten path and avoid the crowds. We decided on small plate dining at La Merenda. It was the perfect choice and we’ll definitely be back.

Cheers, Dad.

Trivia or Baseball
We decided to skip the Brewers game and go to Sporcle Live Trivia at The Hale House on Monday. We enjoyed an Aloha Burger – 1/2 lb burger patty topped with a grilled pineapple slice, house-smoked pork belly, and teriyaki sauce. Chad even liked it! We ordered a dry gin martini in Dad’s honor because it was his birthday. Cheers, Dad. Miss you!

Fry Hound

The Fry Hound
Tini loves French fries. We only recently started giving her a couple of fries and she LOVES them! We seem to have created a monster.

Frankie’s Tiki Room

Ruth in Vegas
Ruth’s friend Andrea is turning 40 so she hosted a birthday party…in Vegas. And of course, Ruth had to introduce everyone to Frankie’s Tiki Room.

Meal Planning
We are temporarily suspending Blue Apron and going to give meal planning and batch cooking a try. This week, Chad made Breakfast Burritos from Project Meal Plan. They are delicious.

114 – TEDx, Fidget Spinners, Gravity

Welcome to Savoring Our Lives!

In this week’s episode, we talk about:

Sarah Knight TEDx Talk
Ruth watched the TEDx Talk “The Life-Changing Magic of Not Giving a F*ck – how to stop spending time you don’t have, with people you don’t like, doing things you don’t want to” by Sarah Knight. Sarah set a ton of boundaries is now living life on her own terms. Her story is so inspiring.

Chad was part of a speaker showcase
He was able to give a new version of his Origami Rocket presentation to a  group of credit union meeting planners. He also wowed his tale with a 3-D printed Fidget Spinner he made.

Gravity…It’s The Law
Ruth missed a step and fell down the stairs and managed to sprain her left ankle. She’s really bad at asking for help and is now (slowly) learning how to do it. It reminded Chad of a mug he saw at his presentation which said, “She believed she could, so she did.” really inspired Chad.

It’s a Dog’s Life
A colleague sent Ruth a link to a dog available on PetFinder who looks just like Tini did when she was younger. We reached out to the rescue program of this dog as well as BREW beagles to keep us in mind.

113 – Maker Faire, Margaritas, and Music

Welcome to Savoring Our Lives!

In this week’s episode, we talk about:

Bay Area Maker Faire
Chad attended the “Greatest Show and Tell On Earth” in San Francisco last weekend. He was able to attend the press day on Friday and was inspired by the Maker to Market section. Chad also got to meet geeky celebrities from This Week In Tech (TWiT). Visit makerfaire.com to find the faire closest to you.

Yet Another Weight Loss Approach
While in the Bay Area, Chad visited his childhood friend Mike who was looking great and had lost a lot of weight. Turns out, Mike’s being more mindful of what he’s eating by using the LoseIt app.

New Budgeting Strategy
We’re still figuring it all out and we had the idea to check in with each other to try to talk the other person out of discretionary purchases. We’re hoping bringing more awareness to what we’re doing will stop unnecessary spending.

National Wine Day
You know we love wine. We might have failed miserably trying to celebrate. Spoiler alert: there were margaritas.

Kicking Off Summer
Here in Wisconsin, we’re in Hardiness Zone 4 meaning you don’t want to plant flowers before Memorial Day due to the possibility of frost. Ruth got everything planted this weekend and we’re ready for summer. We were listening to SomaFM and heard “I Can’t Break Away” by Big Pig from the Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure soundtrack.

112 – Couscous, Smoke, and the Maker Mindset

Welcome to Savoring Our Lives!

In this week’s episode, we talk about:

Budget Update
We’re still using Mint to track our money and trying to be mindful and responsible. We chose to make a Blue Apron recipe instead of going out. While Chad really dislikes couscous he was glad we stayed home and made dinner.

Smoke Alarm Fun
Searing pork for another recipe meant too much smoke in the house and the Nest smoke alarm let us know it was ready to go off. This was the first time since we installed the Nest alarm that it was about to activate.

Maker Mindset and Fashion
One of the employees at Chad’s client this week was an inspiration because he is always willing to take on new challenges and help move the company forward. He is the complete embodiment of the growth mindset.

111 – Beagles, Budgets, Burgers

Welcome to Savoring Our Lives!

In this week’s episode, we talk about:

BREW Beagle Adoption Event
Tini’s been pretty sad since her big brother Tater Tot passed, so we took her to a BREW Beagle adoption event to see if she’d be happy to hang out with other beagles. She ignored the dogs and decided to go shopping for treats and bully sticks instead.

Are Budgets like Diets?
We sat down to figure out our budget and found we might be savoring a little too much in the Restaurants & Bars category! Awareness is key to finances/budgeting. It’s important to sit down and take a look at your finances so you know where you are and can determine where you’re going.

Industrial Revolution
Chad had a client in Indiana and was intrigued by Industrial Revolution Eatery & Grille.  It looked cool, so he stopped in for dinner. They offer a featured burger for their weekly salute to an innovator.

110 – Baseball, Our Anniversary, and Pizza

Welcome to Savoring Our Lives!

In this week’s episode, we talk about:

Our First Brewers Game of the Year
The Brewers took on the St. Louis Cardinals. We tried out the new food offerings and found the concessions teams are still getting their feet under them this season.

Our 11th Wedding Anniversary
The gift for the 11th wedding anniversary is steel. Find out what we thought aboutbuying, but then decided to spend the money on a bottle of Zinfandel  – “Saldo” by The Prisoner – at dinner.

Camp Bar
It’s an up-north lodge type feel with craft cocktails, a fireplace, and outdoor area, and pizza from a local bakery. We both enjoyed Magner’s Cider. It was light and refreshing.

Free Pizza!
It was a home game for Wineza this week. We were starting a bit late so we chose to order from Organ Piper Pizza. The staff surprised us with a free za! Be sure to support your local businesses.

Lounge Lizards
Chad’s recent client was actually the school he attended for junior college 27 years ago. He was happy to be back on campus and it provided an opportunity to catch up with a number of his friends who used to hang out in the campus Lounge.

Welcome to Savoring Our Lives!

In this week’s episode, we talk about:

Ruth Orders Bifocals
Ruth finally gave in and ordered progressive bifocal lenses for her new frames.  She’s officially feeling old.

Milwaukee Day 414
4-14 was Milwaukee Day (Milwaukee’s area code is 414). First we stopped at Mexican restaurant El Beso and Ruth discovered what “gordita” means in Spanish. Later, we visited wine bar Vintage 38 and found Tater Tot Nachos (totchos).

Chad Invents A New Term
What is a disco nap for food? Chad coins the term “Crisco Nap.” We ended up deferring Wineza to Saturday

What We’re Drinking
We really enjoyed this 2014 Petite Sirah from M2 Winery in Lodi, California.  It drank like a Cabernet and was unexpectedly delicious! We’ll share our experience at the winery meeting Winemaker/Founder Layne Montgomery and Bob the Cat.

Gratitude for Tater’s Support Team
We sent thank you notes to everyone on Tater’s team thanking them for their help on his journey. His radiation oncologist called us to extend her condolences. It’s so important to reach out and let people know you’re there and to offer support.

Welcome to Savoring Our Lives!

In this week’s episode, we talk about:

100 days of meditation.
Ruth’s using the Insight Timer meditation app. She started by reading 10% Happier by Dan Harris. Chad talked about DEFCON radio by SomaFM.

First lunch on the patio!
We enjoyed a Blue Apron recipe for lunch and ate outside for the first time in 2017. We find out that Chad dislikes cardinals.

Tini’s 6th anniversary.
Today is Tini’s birthday or as some people call it, “Gotcha Day.” We adopted her through BREW Beagles (Beagle Rescue, Education, and Welfare). You can visit their website and see adoptable beagles at gotbeagles.org.

Seeing Alton Brown live again.
We got to see Alton Brown’s “Eat Your Science” tour. It’s food! It’s science! It’s so us! We previously saw his “Edible Inevitable” tour in 2014. He puts on a fun show and is so good with impromptu audience interaction. You can find him on Twitter at @altonbrown.
