508 – Kitten Cam


Welcome to Savoring Our Lives! In this week’s episode, we:

Got our bikes tuned up
In addition to our new treadmill, we wanted to have another movement option so we got our bikes out. We had to take them in because they needed some love after sitting for a couple years.

Kept an eye on wildlife in the yard

Hummingbird Cam

Chad set up a camera outside to keep an eye on the hummingbird feeder which was cool! And then yesterday, the beagles let us know there were cats under the deck. Later, Abby found a kitten on top of the deck. Chad tried to catch it but it ended up under the deck all day. So the hummingbird cam became kitten cam.

Worked with Abby’s trainer
Laura from Connecting with Dogs came out to visit again to help us fine-tune some of Abby’s training. We have to work on her reactivity with the dog next door as well as going back to doing crate games.

Ate out a little more than usual
We went to Double B’s BBQ to investigate the brisket. We got to see our old server, Michelle, and try the food. Then Saturday, we decided to chill at the wine bar instead of run around. Chad ended up trying the Cobb Salad Hot Dog at Ferch’s Malt Shoppe and Grille across the walkway from Vintage 38.

506 – Instant Brisket

Welcome to Savoring Our Lives! In this week’s episode we:

Celebrated Shelley Long Appreciation Day
Actually, no. We didn’t. But Ruth got Chad to look up the history of the holiday. Turns out there is no Shelley Long Appreciation Day.

Continued to pretend we were in Vegas

Wild Mushroom Flat Bread at Milwaukee Beer Bistro

For our anniversary, we went out for steak dinner at Mr. B’s Steakhouse. The next night we went out for date night and visited Milwaukee Beer Bistro and then enjoyed tiki drinks at Foundation.

Learned to let go
Chad is letting his membership at Milwaukee Makerspace go. He likes the community but the space itself isn’t matching up with what he’s doing. And then, on Saturday we celebrated our friend Dave’s 55th birthday at a party held by his family. He’s fighting stage four lung cancer so the event was bittersweet for all.

Tried to perfect a brisket recipe
We’ve been trying to come up with a plan to eat better more consistently and Chad’s eating a little more paleo so he thought he’d give an Instant Pot recipe for brisket. The recipe took waaaay longer than we thought. So we ended up calling for pizza.

Started to say hello to summer
Our landscapers are on their way and we just replaced our patio chairs. Now we just need the warm weather to arrive!

505 – Making Lemonade


Welcome to Savoring Our Lives! In this week’s episode:

We had a beagle adventure
Abby got very sick Monday with acute gastroenteritis which then led to aspirated pneumonia. It was three days of ups and downs and two nights at the emergency vet. We chose to postpone our trip to Vegas to take the best care of her we can. She continues to be on the mend.

Chad found himself in a ditch
He was driving home from Illinois during a snowstorm and spun out into a ditch. A tow truck got him out and he received a ticket. The best news is he and the car were okay.

We got lemons and, well, we added vodka
Since we were going to be in town this weekend, we had a number of opportunities to try new restaurants and see a number of friends. We visited Mad Rooster Cafe for brunch Friday. The food was quite good. Later that night, we went out with friends to an all-you-can-eat-crab legs buffet at the local casino. Then Saturday, we stopped for birthday drinks with friends and then had dinner with another friend. Even though we’re not in Vegas, we had a great weekend.

Chad got his bloodwork results from his doctor
And, he’s pre-diabetic with high cholesterol. He has a six-month follow up and his numbers need to be going in the right direction or they’ll prescribe meds. His doc wants him to focus more on less carbs and more veggies. Our dinner Saturday was all paleo and all delicious.

504 – Eating Salads


Welcome to Savoring Our Lives! In this week’s episode:

Chad saw a doctor for the first time this century
Chad had an appointment with a new primary care physician. His blood work results came in this morning and some lipid panel numbers were a little high. Now Chad needs to eat plants.

We ate salads for Date Night
Chad was glad he ordered a cocktail. And we tried to be healthier and ordered salads for dinner.

We went to the Weird Al concert
We scored second row tickets to the show at the very last minute. Emo Philips opened the show and was surprisingly ridiculously funny. Al and his band did a show full of originals – songs written in the styles of other artists – which was a lot of fun.

We ate a lot of pizza
We enjoyed our usual Wineza (pizza and wine) night on Friday even though we were going out with a friend on Saturday for pizza.

Chad went to CypherCon
CypherCon was in Milwaukee this week. Chad got to meet hacking superstars Joe Grand and Ben Heck.

503 – Cauliflower Crust

This week we visited Parkside 23 for date night. On the way, Ruth was pretty sure Chad threw a shaka symbol at a Methodist church.

As a tradition of our family of friends, we visited Wasabi Sushi Lounge for all-you-can-eat sushi for Easter.

Started getting fit
It’s official: we’re back on the road to fitness. Ruth started walking, the treadmill arrived, and Chad started running. We also had a coaching session with a fitness trainer who suggested another style of eating for us.

Cauliflower Pizza Crust!

Made healthier choices
We were challenged to have a pizza with a cauliflower crust – in an effort to eat more plant-based foods. Chad was apprehensive, but in the end, he admitted to really liking it!

Connected with a friend
We had the opportunity to connect with our friend JJ in real time – on a phone call! It was balm for the soul.

502 – Spring Wine and Chocolate

Got our taxes done
We braced for the worst again this year, but amazingly we have refunds coming this year instead of owing a lot of money! We celebrated with margaritas.

Margarita Time!

Worked on eating less beef
We had home runs and base hits this year. Sunday we made a Shakshuka with Feta and it was delicious. Definitely a home run! Then we made some Turkey-Hummus Sliders and they were just a base hit.

Celebrated Chad’s sixth match anniversary
Chad is part of Big Brother Big Sisters and they threw a party for all the Bigs and Littles. Chad and Elijah have been matched for six years already.

Chocolate & Wine Pairing at Indulgence Chocolatiers

Attended a Spring Wine and Chocolate pairing
We visited Indulgence Chocolatiers for their spring wine pairing. We tried five different wines and chocolates which were all very floral (think: spring). And we ran into one of Chad’s former colleagues and his wife.

Stayed at home Saturday night
We made good dinner decisions and chose a Chili-Lime Tilapia recipe and then we rented Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle.

501 – Mediterranean Diet

Ate a lot
Ruth visited Tre Rivali with her friend Sarah. The meat and cheese plate was simply outstanding. Then, we revisited Matty’s and tried the “Cheese Logs” – these were way more than a simple cheese stick.

Found ourselves back in Total Wine
We returned to Total Wine to pick up a couple more bottles of wine for the cellar. Chad was fronting bottles as we went along and the staff was thrilled.

Enjoyed a celebration of life
We went out to Mr. B’s Steakhouse to celebrate the life of the best beagle/basset ever – our very own Tater Tot who passed away one year ago.

Got some test results
Ruth saw a new doc and had some tests done. Her A1C level is pre-pre-diabetic. Her doctor recommended changing diet and exercise. We’re exploring the Mediterranean diet, Chad will be visiting a doctor, and we’re going to start exercising.

We took Tini and Abby to a “Rocket Recalls” class on Friday. The intent was to help reinforce their recall ability.

413 – Earworm


Welcome to Savoring Our Lives! In this week’s episode we:

Got an Instant Pot

Instant Pot Korean Beef

We took the plunge and purchased a refurbished Instant Pot. Our first recipe was Korean beef. We were amazed at how it worked (and had to consult the user manual online).

Headed out for date night
We went to Tenuta’s in Bay View for Italian. Ruth got the mushroom ravioli and it was delicious. We’ll definitely be back and we’ll have to try the pizza!

Spent too much on wine
On Wednesday, we ordered by the glass and it was way more expensive than simply buying a bottle. Then, we were off to wineza with more wine. And finally on Saturday, we visited the new Total Wine near our house and brought wine home.

Got “How Far I’ll Go” stuck on a loop in our heads
We heard the main song from Disney’s Moana while shopping at Total Wine. Neither of us knows the words, so it just won’t leave our brains. Oh, and Chad rants on voice actors vs big name actors.

Trained the Beagiles
We celebrated Abby’s birthday last week Sunday. And we’ve been busy working with her to help her be safer and healthier.

412 – Random Act of Kindness


Welcome to Savoring Our Lives! In this week’s episode we:

Eggs Benedict at Bass Bay Brewhouse

Visited Bass Bay Brewhouse for brunch
Chad had their “Shenanigans” dish which had everything and the kitchen sink in it. Ruth really enjoyed the Eggs Benedict. See the whole brunch menu here.

Continued to eat
On Monday, we tried The Suburban Bourbon and enjoyed a couple of their burgers with a bottle of wine. Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday we cooked dinner at home – including an epic Tater Tot Casserole. On Friday, we stayed home for Wineza and paired it with a brand new bottle of M2 Zinfandel.

Had a full day on Saturday
We had a family funeral visitation to attend Saturday morning. Ruth had to work to enforce some boundaries around what she needed. Afterwards, we had certified professional dog trainer Laura from Connecting with Dogs come over to help us humans communicate more effectively with both dogs (but especially Abby).

Were the recipients of a random act of kindness
We decided to order burgers from Ricardo’s in the Greendale Village and then head over to Vintage 38 for wine – specifically Hook or Crook 2015 Lodi Cabernet. Since the grapes are from Lodi, the wine had a great depth of flavor.  At the bar there’s a photo for sale on the wall we’re pretty sure is the view from our future island home. An amazingly kind gentleman at the bar – who wanted to be known as “Bob” – purchased it and gifted it to us. We were stunned and couldn’t believe his generosity. We will definitely be paying it forward. Cheers, “Bob.”

411 – Plain Cake Donut

Ruth and her friend Sarah visited Indulgence Chocolatiers and enjoyed a class pairing their chocolates with tiki cocktails. It was fun and delicious. The cocktails reminded Chad of the song “Drink To Hawaii” by Richard Cheese.

Chad was eating in Iowa
He was in Iowa training and his clients took him to a BBQ joint, a taco/burrito place, and a place called Saucy Focaccia. And then they brought in donuts from the build-your-own donut shop, The Donut Experiment.

We didn’t close our Activity rings
Ruth’s hour-long yoga class lasted three hours and 48 minutes on her Activity app because she forgot to turn it off after class. Oops! We’re challenging ourselves to move at least three days this week.

Pokemon Go hosted a special event
We were in the middle of a project spring cleaning/rearranging the basement when Chad realized he needed to leave for an hour and catch a bunch of Dratinis.

Visited Mom’s and went through Dad’s tools
Ruth’s mom is in the process of purging her dad’s stuff. We visited to take a look at his stash of tools and see if there was anything we needed.
