403 – Puff Pastry

Taco Pizza

Tried a Taco Pizza

We went out for Wineza and decided to try a specialty pizza – taco pizza, specifically. Unfortunately, it was more of a taco salad in pizza form.

Declared a Word of The Week
Chad singled out the word “pedantic” as his word of the week. Pedantic: “a person who is obsessively concerned with…displaying academic learning.” Mostly because one of his former co-workers tends to be that way on Facebook. And suddenly, Chad realized he is now doing the same to a different friend. Whoops!

Happiness Jar

Relived wonderful memories of 2017
Each year we fill a jar with index cards outlining the happy events of the year. On New Year’s Eve, we open the jar and read through all the memories. This year’s jar was filled with joy and tears.

Declared a war on puff pastry
We got ambitious on NYE with a recipe for Beef Wellington (and an amazing creamy garlic mashed potato recipe by Alton Brown). The puff pastry it gets wrapped in was incredibly difficult to deal with. So, we gave it another chance with some sausages later in the week.

Swimming Dogs

Took the beagles to Canine IQ Camp
We spent the entire day with the girls at Think Pawsitive Dog Training working on obedience, manners, and more. They got to try agility, rally, nose work, conditioning, and…swimming! They were not as excited about swimming as we’d hoped but both will be signing up for other classes in the future.

312 – Shopping


Welcome to Savoring Our Lives! In this week’s episode, we:

Pulled Pork Totchos

Ate a lot of tater tots
For date night, we visited 42 Ale House in St. Francis. They offer a lot of board games as well as food and beverages! In addition to ordering tots with each of our entrees, we had the pulled pork tot-chos. It was a LOT of tots!

Went clothes shopping
Ruth had to buy a new winter coat because the zipper on her coat broke. Then we headed to Torrid to find jeans. She had no idea they had real clothes that didn’t feature Jack Skellington or Hello Kitty and was pleasantly surprised by the nice looking offerings. We took a break in between and stopped for some wine and apps at Pizza Man. The wine was a C5 Ranch Cabernet and the apps included sausage stuffed olives and mozzarella sticks.

Abby in her e-collar

Visited the Emergency Vet
Abby was running along the fence with the neighbor dog and ended up tearing a nail on her back foot. After mild sedation and pain relievers, the emergency vet “ripped” the nail out and bandaged her up. The nail will grow back and she’ll be fine. In the meantime, she gets to wear the cone of shame.

Started tracking our food again
Chad is using the Day One Journal app and taking photos of his food. Ruth is using LoseIt. Any bets on how long we’ll last?

Chad celebrated Lady Ada Lovelace’s birthday
Lady Ada was the world’s first programmer in the 1800s. Another woman who’s online handle is Lady Ada created a website called AdaFruit.com which offers insight into technology. He recently ran across an article about Hollywood star Hedy Lamar and her engineering background.

203 – Welcome Back

Welcome to Savoring Our Lives!

Welcome Back
We were gone for a couple weeks, but we’re back! We were in Orlando for the National Speakers Association conference. In between breakout sessions, we had fun eating and drinking around the properties including the Spirit of Aloha luau and Trader Sam’s Grog Grotto.

Beagle Update Tini and Abby stayed with Uncle Curt and Aunt Jasmine while we were gone. And now, the girls are gettingalong and Abby is finding her place in our pack.  (L to R: Abby, Tini, Annie, Timmy)

Being Social vs Doing Dishes
Chad was out of town and Ruth had the opportunity to see Mystery Science Theater 3000 (MST3K) live here in Milwaukee. But first she had to battle getting up the gumption to go out and not stay home and do dishes.

Meal Planning
We’re still batch cooking. We make Damn Delicious’ One Pot Mexican Rice Casserole this week. And, man, it was damn delicious!

Shakespeare in the Park
We saw Optimist Theatre’s performance of Shakespeare’s “Much Ado About Nothing.” This year, the theatre company moved to a new, very nice venue right in the middle of downtown Milwaukee.

Hey Baby, Let’s Go To Vegas
We’ll be off the air next week because we’ll be in Vegas for DEFCON25. See you in August!

202 – National Mai Tai Day

Abby The Beagle Update
Abby’s doing pretty well and she and Tini are playing a bit. She’s become a bit of Chad’s shadow and is experiencing some separation anxiety.

National Mai Tai Day
Friday, June 30 was National Mai Tai Day so naturally, we went out tocelebrate! There may have been extra rum.

Cheesecoal and Tater Tots
As part of meal prep, we are learning to be okay with failure as we go along. From homemade tater tots to charcoal tortillas, we’re still learning some cooking techniques (aka learning to follow directions).

116 – Zima, Weight, Woz

Welcome to Savoring Our Lives!

In this week’s episode, we talk about:

Wineza with Friends This week, we invited some friends over for wineza. We had some fun timesand some Zima (a malt beverage from the ’90s)! Our friends brought their beagles, Timmy and Annie. Tini let Annie play with her (favorite) toys.

Searching for Dogs
We attended Fido Fest on Saturday and chatted with a behavioral specialist about Tini and her grief. We’re not sure we’re ready or if Tini’s ready for a new dog, but we’re starting the process. We contacted BREW Beagles and another rescue group to inquire about available dogs.

Shopping and Meal Planning
Today we went grocery shopping using a digital list in the Paprika app. Turns out Chad is a digital guy; Ruth is a pen and paper gal. We’ll be prepping three make-ahead meals this Sunday. We found an easy lasagne recipe on DamnDelicious.net.

Managing Our Weight
We’re still using the LoseIt app. Ruth realized she’s consistently about 600 calories over her allotment. Chad has lost an entire quarter pound in the last month. We’re going to stick with it and add in some exercise (whaaat?!).

Inspiration This Week
Chad watched a video of Apple Computer co-founder Steve Wozniak (Woz)  where he talked about the formula for a happy life.

H =  S – F Happiness equals smiles minus frowns
H = F3 – Happiness equals food x fun x friends

Ruth had a crappy Wednesday but remembered her friend Meg’s mantra: “Look for the happiness in life’s crappiness” when she had some really great things happen.

And we were both inspired by a blog post by professional speaker Jason Kotecki – “What if you knew the numbers” which focused on how important it is to really savor every moment you have.

114 – TEDx, Fidget Spinners, Gravity

Welcome to Savoring Our Lives!

In this week’s episode, we talk about:

Sarah Knight TEDx Talk
Ruth watched the TEDx Talk “The Life-Changing Magic of Not Giving a F*ck – how to stop spending time you don’t have, with people you don’t like, doing things you don’t want to” by Sarah Knight. Sarah set a ton of boundaries is now living life on her own terms. Her story is so inspiring.

Chad was part of a speaker showcase
He was able to give a new version of his Origami Rocket presentation to a  group of credit union meeting planners. He also wowed his tale with a 3-D printed Fidget Spinner he made.

Gravity…It’s The Law
Ruth missed a step and fell down the stairs and managed to sprain her left ankle. She’s really bad at asking for help and is now (slowly) learning how to do it. It reminded Chad of a mug he saw at his presentation which said, “She believed she could, so she did.” really inspired Chad.

It’s a Dog’s Life
A colleague sent Ruth a link to a dog available on PetFinder who looks just like Tini did when she was younger. We reached out to the rescue program of this dog as well as BREW beagles to keep us in mind.

111 – Beagles, Budgets, Burgers

BREW Beagle Adoption Event
Tini’s been pretty sad since her big brother Tater Tot passed, so we took her to a BREW Beagle adoption event to see if she’d be happy to hang out with other beagles. She ignored the dogs and decided to go shopping for treats and bully sticks instead.

Are Budgets like Diets?
We sat down to figure out our budget and found we might be savoring a little too much in the Restaurants & Bars category! Awareness is key to finances/budgeting. It’s important to sit down and take a look at your finances so you know where you are and can determine where you’re going.

Industrial Revolution
Chad had a client in Indiana and was intrigued by Industrial Revolution Eatery & Grille.  It looked cool, so he stopped in for dinner. They offer a featured burger for their weekly salute to an innovator.
