Welcome to Savoring Our Lives! In this week’s episode:
We had a beagle adventure Abby got very sick Monday with acute gastroenteritis which then led to aspirated pneumonia. It was three days of ups and downs and two nights at the emergency vet. We chose to postpone our trip to Vegas to take the best care of her we can. She continues to be on the mend.
Chad found himself in a ditch
He was driving home from Illinois during a snowstorm and spun out into a ditch. A tow truck got him out and he received a ticket. The best news is he and the car were okay.
We got lemons and, well, we added vodka
Since we were going to be in town this weekend, we had a number of opportunities to try new restaurants and see a number of friends. We visited Mad Rooster Cafe for brunch Friday. The food was quite good. Later that night, we went out with friends to an all-you-can-eat-crab legs buffet at the local casino. Then Saturday, we stopped for birthday drinks with friends and then had dinner with another friend. Even though we’re not in Vegas, we had a great weekend.
Chad got his bloodwork results from his doctor
And, he’s pre-diabetic with high cholesterol. He has a six-month follow up and his numbers need to be going in the right direction or they’ll prescribe meds. His doc wants him to focus more on less carbs and more veggies. Our dinner Saturday was all paleo and all delicious.

Welcome to Savoring Our Lives! In this week’s episode we:
Got our taxes done We braced for the worst again this year, but amazingly we have refunds coming this year instead of owing a lot of money! We celebrated with margaritas.
Worked on eating less beef
We had home runs and base hits this year. Sunday we made a Shakshuka with Feta and it was delicious. Definitely a home run! Then we made some Turkey-Hummus Sliders and they were just a base hit.
Celebrated Chad’s sixth match anniversary
Chad is part of Big Brother Big Sisters and they threw a party for all the Bigs and Littles. Chad and Elijah have been matched for six years already.
Attended a Spring Wine and Chocolate pairing
We visited Indulgence Chocolatiers for their spring wine pairing. We tried five different wines and chocolates which were all very floral (think: spring). And we ran into one of Chad’s former colleagues and his wife.
Welcome to Savoring Our Lives! In this week’s episode, we:
Had a lot of chicken
Ruth made slow cooker salsa chicken last week and killed the ceramic part of the crock pot while cleaning up. We ordered a new crock but we’re not sure it fits but we’re cooking some more chicken right now so we’ll see if it works.
Had a lot of wine
Chad saw something on social media about 19 Crimes Wine and the augmented reality app they developed. So he volunteered to go shopping for dinner and came back with five different bottles of the wine. We had a blast using the app and watching the stories.
Discussed date night
A number of things changed and we’re not really going out on the regular for trivia anymore. Instead, Ruth suggested trying different restaurants on Monday and making it date night.
Went out with friends
We had a wide open schedule this weekend and our friends Chris and Christine invited us out for margaritas at Guanajuato. Afterwards, we all headed over to our house for wine, cheese, crackers, and doggy snuggles.
Stopped by our usual wine bar for inspiration
We got out of the house to come up with some Grand Ideas in advance of a meeting Ruth was going to have. We threw the barkeep for a loop showing up without pizza and on a Wednesday.

Welcome to Savoring Our Lives! In this week’s episode, we:
Watched Stranger Things
Spoiler-free discussion! Netflix launched season 2 of Stranger Things last week and we watched all nine episodes this week. It’s been fun to see the series’ take on the 1980s. It blew Chad’s mind when Ruth pointed out that since the show takes place in 1983/1984, he would actually have been as old as the kids in the show.
Made Chicken Cordon Bleu We’ve been doing a lot of batch cooking so last night we made a single meal – Chicken Cordon Bleu. We’ve learned a lot since the first time we made a version of this meal. If there’s one thing we’ve learned it’s to salt and pepper all the things! We did find out that Ruth misheard the lyrics for “Cornflake Girl” for well over 20 years.
Had Lunch With Friends
Our friend Char made her homemade Baked Potato soup. It was full of butter, potatoes, love and topped with cheese and bacon. It was inspiring to be with friends and sharing a meal.
Took a Tour of Wantable
We had to opportunity to see local startup, Wantable. As an online fashion shopping service, they’ve experienced immense growth over the last few years. It was great to see how they continue to learn and figure things out as they go along.
Decided to Write in NaNoWriMo Chad is finally writing his book! And while NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writer’s Month) is dedicated to writing novels, he’s going to finish his non-fiction book! Want to follow along on his progress? Go here and keep an eye on his progress.

Wineza with Friends This week, we invited some friends over for wineza. We had some fun timesand some Zima (a malt beverage from the ’90s)! Our friends brought their beagles, Timmy and Annie. Tini let Annie play with her (favorite) toys.
Searching for Dogs
We attended Fido Fest on Saturday and chatted with a behavioral specialist about Tini and her grief. We’re not sure we’re ready or if Tini’s ready for a new dog, but we’re starting the process. We contacted BREW Beagles and another rescue group to inquire about available dogs.
Shopping and Meal Planning
Today we went grocery shopping using a digital list in the Paprika app. Turns out Chad is a digital guy; Ruth is a pen and paper gal. We’ll be prepping three make-ahead meals this Sunday. We found an easy lasagne recipe on DamnDelicious.net.
Managing Our Weight
We’re still using the LoseIt app. Ruth realized she’s consistently about 600 calories over her allotment. Chad has lost an entire quarter pound in the last month. We’re going to stick with it and add in some exercise (whaaat?!).
