MakerFaire Milwaukee
Milwaukee is hosting its 4th annual MakerFaire – “the greatest show and tell on Earth” and Chad will be presenting his “To Err Is Divine” platform today. We volunteered at registration on Saturday. And we were able to see the Tesla Coils in action, and a World Record attempt for Daleks.

Food Fun
We made the dump recipe “One Pan Enchilada Bake” and it was easy and delicious.  It reminded Chad of a recipe his mom used to make…but better!

Wine Club Shipments
We had two wine club shipments arrive this week – Ravenswood and Francis Ford Coppola. Check out our Instagram to see all the selections.

Nature and Wildlife
Happy Fall! Ruth encountered a hummingbird this morning and Chad admits to really liking where we live. We encounter a lot of wildlife and recently Chad found a three-week old kitten in our driveway. Milwaukee Area Domestic Animal Control Commission came out to help.

209 – The Quest for Doughnuts

Magic Wineza
Chad was at a client near Detroit on Friday, but made it home in time for Wineza. Chad was convinced we weren’t going to be able to have Wineza this weekend, but Ruth made it happen beautifully. We enjoyed a 2015 Educated  Guess Cabernet.

Ruth’s Mom’s Birthday Dinner

Mom’s Birthday Sundae

Mom chose Outback Steakhouse for her birthday dinner. She likes going there because she chooses to eat gluten-free. We enjoyed our meals – Ruth got Alice Springs Chicken and Chad had the Cobb Salad with Steak. Chad really enjoyed the 2015 Federalist Cabernet.  Ruth thought the ice cream/hot fudge sundae was particularly delightful.

 

Doughnut Quest
Our doughnut options have recently changed and we’re not thrilled. We’re trying to find really yummy doughnuts (and coffee) to enjoy before we record our podcast each week. This week we tried yet another vendor only to be disappointed.

Abby Tantrum
We went for a walk with Abby and Tini. Since Ruth’s been in the boot for the last six weeks, Abby hasn’t been out walking. We put the Gentle Leader on Abby to go for the walk and she was less than pleased – to the point she threw herself on the ground and had what could only be called a tantrum.

Milwaukee Maker Faire
Next week’s Milwaukee Maker Faire will feature both Ruth and Chad as volunteers and Chad will be presenting his keynote on Sunday. Find all the info here.

Awkward Yeti
Chad sent an Awkward Yeti comic to Ruth this week (click here to see it on Facebook). It was all about the negativity bias of our brains, but much like what we do with this podcast we work to focus on searching for and finding the good stuff in the world and in our lives.

Ruth’s Ankle Update
Ruth is getting out of the boot on her leg this week and is super excited about the prospect of being free. She still has some physical therapy and acupuncture to go through.

The Pessimist Wine

Food Fest, Wine Recon, Wineza We made a ton of meals for our week on Labor Day. We made four recipes (28 servings) for just $60. Meal planning is us saving time, money, and calories. One of the recipes we really like and have tweaked to make our own is the Make Ahead Freezer Breakfast Burritos.

Ruth visited the Italian restaurant Onesto with a co-worker and tried a Luccarelli Primitivo which was quite delicious.

Wineza this week was an away game with a small pizza from Klasiana Pizza and a Pessimist wine at our local wine bar Vintage 38.

Random RoboCop Reference
Chad talked to a friend about RoboCop this week – apparently the movie is almost symmetrical. We need to watch this again!

Ravinia Festival

Stevie Nicks at Ravinia Festival 
We visited Ravinia Festival in Highland Park, Illinois to see Stevie Nicks – Ruth’s spirit animal. See the set list here. We had lawn seats rather than sitting in the pavilion. We’re getting better at figuring out how to do lawn seats right. Hint: it includes candelabras. Find out what we learned about how to do Ravinia the right way.

110 – Baseball, Our Anniversary, and Pizza

Our First Brewers Game of the Year
The Brewers took on the St. Louis Cardinals. We tried out the new food offerings and found the concessions teams are still getting their feet under them this season.

Our 11th Wedding Anniversary
The gift for the 11th wedding anniversary is steel. Find out what we thought aboutbuying, but then decided to spend the money on a bottle of Zinfandel  – “Saldo” by The Prisoner – at dinner.

Camp Bar
It’s an up-north lodge type feel with craft cocktails, a fireplace, and outdoor area, and pizza from a local bakery. We both enjoyed Magner’s Cider. It was light and refreshing.

Free Pizza!
It was a home game for Wineza this week. We were starting a bit late so we chose to order from Organ Piper Pizza. The staff surprised us with a free za! Be sure to support your local businesses.

Lounge Lizards
Chad’s recent client was actually the school he attended for junior college 27 years ago. He was happy to be back on campus and it provided an opportunity to catch up with a number of his friends who used to hang out in the campus Lounge.

Ruth Orders Bifocals
Ruth finally gave in and ordered progressive bifocal lenses for her new frames.  She’s officially feeling old.

Milwaukee Day 414
4-14 was Milwaukee Day (Milwaukee’s area code is 414). First we stopped at Mexican restaurant El Beso and Ruth discovered what “gordita” means in Spanish. Later, we visited wine bar Vintage 38 and found Tater Tot Nachos (totchos).

Chad Invents A New Term
What is a disco nap for food? Chad coins the term “Crisco Nap.” We ended up deferring Wineza to Saturday

What We’re Drinking
We really enjoyed this 2014 Petite Sirah from M2 Winery in Lodi, California.  It drank like a Cabernet and was unexpectedly delicious! We’ll share our experience at the winery meeting Winemaker/Founder Layne Montgomery and Bob the Cat.

Gratitude for Tater’s Support Team
We sent thank you notes to everyone on Tater’s team thanking them for their help on his journey. His radiation oncologist called us to extend her condolences. It’s so important to reach out and let people know you’re there and to offer support.
