Welcome to Savoring Our Lives! In this week’s episode, we:
Paired Halloween candy with wine
Our fave wine bar was hosting a fun Halloween mini-event – pairing Halloween fun sized candies with different wines. We naturally experimented with the three different candies and named a winner. Because…SCIENCE!
We like to play cribbage. Without a deck of cards or a cribbage board last week we resorted to a multi-player app. So this week, we found real, live cribbage board at the wine bar and enjoyed a super close game.
Went to a Housewarming/Halloween Party
Friends of ours hosted a Halloween costume party and we needed to find a leather duster jacket so Chad could go as vampire David from The Lost Boys. We shopped at the local St. Vincent de Paul second-hand store and were really impressed with the display and curation of their inventory.
At the party, we met Loki, a really well-behaved Australian Cattle Dog. He was super cute and is in “training” to be a support dog. We’ve been following a page on Facebook called Speaking Dog with Shana and asked for help with Abby’s barrier aggression.
Ruth started walking in the morning and found it was better than journaling in the morning. She’s still using the Insight Timer app, but walking is almost like a meditation. It’s all about taking good care of yourself.

On Location in Minneapolis!
We really enjoy Minneapolis and somewhat regularly schedule getaway weekends there.
Minneapolis has a vast network of Skyways which connect multiple buildings throughout downtown. We were able to take the Skyway from our hotel to Penny’s Coffee and stay out of the rain.
We started in the restaurant in the hotel with cheese curds and a drink. Then we walked across the Mississippi River to Northeast Minneapolis to try Punch Neapolitan Pizza. Afterwards, we stopped for a glass of wine at wine bar Bardo, next door.
After coffee, we headed out to Chanhassen to see Paisley Park – Prince’s home, studio, and performance space which has been converted into a museum since his passing in 2016. It was deeply cool and still incredibly sad to be in the space. We couldn’t take photos, so go there and see it all for yourself!
And of course, we stopped at our favorite tiki bar, Psycho Suzi’s Motor Lounge. We love Suzi, but we’ve decided to go exploring other restaurants next time we’re in town. We’re still friends, but we need to see other restaurants.

Injuries and Sickness Updates
She can’t even believe it, but Ruth is actually walking without a limp! It’s been a long journey, but her ankle is almost healed. What a relief. Chad, however, is still fighting the plague.
With Chad’s sickness, we didn’t prep food for the week, so we went out to eat a few times. For the most part, we found the food to be really mediocre. Have we hit a point where we like the food we create better than restaurant food?
A New Wine
We ate at local pizza staple Pizza Man this week. In addition to the outstanding service, we enjoyed a 2014 Field Recordings Cabernet Sauvignon from the Hinterland Vineyard in San Luis Obispo. It was pretty deep, tangy, and delicious. They actually described it as “mocha, black currant, and tobacco” flavors.
With a new dog comes new flooring challenges. Abby’s had a number of accidents, so we had the carpets cleaned this week. Chris at Classic Carpet & Upholstery Cleaning did a great job and gave us some really good suggestions for flooring options and suggestions about dust/dirt management.
Want to share your story about how you’re savoring your life? Or if you have a favorite pizza topping combo or if you’ve changed from carpets to hardwood floors…let us know!
Sickness at the Lawson Ranch
Chad’s been sick all week with a cold/the flu. Tini wasn’t feeling good, either. She ended up getting subcutaneous fluids and an anti-nausea pill. She usually does pretty well, but this time it didn’t agree with her and we were all up all night.
What We’re Drinking
Friday was National Coffee Day. Ruth enjoyed a yummy decaf from Kickapoo Coffee Roasters who roast their decaf so it’s actually flavorful.
Since Chad’s been sick, he’s been drinking a mocktail of 7-Up and Cran-Apple juice his mom used to have him drink when he was sick as a kid. But then, we kicked it up a notch when we found Hot Toddies. We found a very simple recipe on Epicurious and decided to try it (in the name of science). It tasted great and helped soothe Chad’s coughing for a while.
Chad came across a 2010 Cabernet called The Guardian at the grocery store. We opened it up and found it needed to breathe for a few days before it was ready to drink. It ended up being deep and rich tasting.
Ruth and her friend Sarah attended Bay View Gallery Night – a night of local art in a city neighborhood. It included art, performances, music, shopping, and more. We found a very curious shrine to Elvis.
We ordered some new stuff for the pups from Chewy.com. But, we ordered the wrong size bowls. They were nearly swimming pool size. So we emailed to find out how to exchange the bowls. Instead of having us send the bowls back, they asked us to donate them to a local shelter or adoption facility.

Milwaukee is hosting its 4th annual MakerFaire – “the greatest show and tell on Earth” and Chad will be presenting his “To Err Is Divine” platform today. We volunteered at registration on Saturday. And we were able to see the Tesla Coils in action, and a World Record attempt for Daleks.
We made the dump recipe “One Pan Enchilada Bake” and it was easy and delicious. It reminded Chad of a recipe his mom used to make…but better!
Chad was at a client near Detroit on Friday, but made it home in time for Wineza. Chad was convinced we weren’t going to be able to have Wineza this weekend, but Ruth made it happen beautifully. We enjoyed a 2015 Educated Guess Cabernet.
Ruth’s Mom’s Birthday Dinner
Mom chose Outback Steakhouse for her birthday dinner. She likes going there because she chooses to eat gluten-free. We enjoyed our meals – Ruth got Alice Springs Chicken and Chad had the Cobb Salad with Steak. Chad really enjoyed the 2015 Federalist Cabernet. Ruth thought the ice cream/hot fudge sundae was particularly delightful.
Our doughnut options have recently changed and we’re not thrilled. We’re trying to find really yummy doughnuts (and coffee) to enjoy before we record our podcast each week. This week we tried yet another vendor only to be disappointed.
We went for a walk with Abby and Tini. Since Ruth’s been in the boot for the last six weeks, Abby hasn’t been out walking. We put the Gentle Leader on Abby to go for the walk and she was less than pleased – to the point she threw herself on the ground and had what could only be called a tantrum.
Milwaukee Maker Faire
Next week’s Milwaukee Maker Faire will feature both Ruth and Chad as volunteers and Chad will be presenting his keynote on Sunday. Find all the info here.
Chad sent an Awkward Yeti comic to Ruth this week (click here to see it on Facebook). It was all about the negativity bias of our brains, but much like what we do with this podcast we work to focus on searching for and finding the good stuff in the world and in our lives.
Want to share your story about how you’re savoring your life? Or if you have a story about your dog having a tantrum or your most favorite doughnut purveyor…let us know!
Ruth’s Ankle Update
Ruth is getting out of the boot on her leg this week and is super excited about the prospect of being free. She still has some physical therapy and acupuncture to go through.
Food Fest, Wine Recon, Wineza We made a ton of meals for our week on Labor Day. We made four recipes (28 servings) for just $60. Meal planning is us saving time, money, and calories. One of the recipes we really like and have tweaked to make our own is the Make Ahead Freezer Breakfast Burritos.
Random RoboCop Reference
Chad talked to a friend about RoboCop this week – apparently the movie is almost symmetrical. We need to watch this again!
Stevie Nicks at Ravinia Festival
We visited Ravinia Festival in Highland Park, Illinois to see Stevie Nicks – Ruth’s spirit animal. See the set list here. We had lawn seats rather than sitting in the pavilion. We’re getting better at figuring out how to do lawn seats right. Hint: it includes candelabras. Find out what we learned about how to do Ravinia the right way.
Want to share your story about how you’re savoring your life? Or if you have a story about wine recon or a diet we should try where we can still have Wineza, or maybe who your spirit animal is…let us know!
Our First Brewers Game of the Year The Brewers took on the St. Louis Cardinals. We tried out the new food offerings and found the concessions teams are still getting their feet under them this season.
Our 11th Wedding Anniversary The gift for the 11th wedding anniversary is steel. Find out what we thought aboutbuying, but then decided to spend the money on a bottle of Zinfandel – “Saldo” by The Prisoner – at dinner.
It’s an up-north lodge type feel with craft cocktails, a fireplace, and outdoor area, and pizza from a local bakery. We both enjoyed Magner’s Cider. It was light and refreshing.
It was a home game for Wineza this week. We were starting a bit late so we chose to order from Organ Piper Pizza. The staff surprised us with a free za! Be sure to support your local businesses.
Chad’s recent client was actually the school he attended for junior college 27 years ago. He was happy to be back on campus and it provided an opportunity to catch up with a number of his friends who used to hang out in the campus Lounge.

Ruth Orders Bifocals
Ruth finally gave in and ordered progressive bifocal lenses for her new frames. She’s officially feeling old.
Milwaukee Day 414
4-14 was Milwaukee Day (Milwaukee’s area code is 414). First we stopped at Mexican restaurant El Beso and Ruth discovered what “gordita” means in Spanish. Later, we visited wine bar Vintage 38 and found Tater Tot Nachos (totchos).
Chad Invents A New Term
What is a disco nap for food? Chad coins the term “Crisco Nap.” We ended up deferring Wineza to Saturday
What We’re Drinking
We really enjoyed this 2014 Petite Sirah from M2 Winery in Lodi, California. It drank like a Cabernet and was unexpectedly delicious! We’ll share our experience at the winery meeting Winemaker/Founder Layne Montgomery and Bob the Cat.
Gratitude for Tater’s Support Team
We sent thank you notes to everyone on Tater’s team thanking them for their help on his journey. His radiation oncologist called us to extend her condolences. It’s so important to reach out and let people know you’re there and to offer support.
